August 11, 2008 The Bessemer City Council met in regular session on August 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM in the Council Chambers of City Hall. Members Present Mayor Bob Hovis; Council Members: Jim Long, Becky Smith, Marilyn Best, Kay McCathen, Wayne Massagee. Also present were City Manager Allan Farris and City Attorney David Smith. Call to Order, Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance Mayor Hovis opened the meeting with prayer remembering family members of Marilyn Best (Alfred Best) and Becky Smith (Gwyn Steelman). Mayor Hovis then led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Approval of Minutes Upon motion of Jim Long and second of Kay McCathen the minutes of the July 14, 2008 Council meeting were unanimously approved. Declaration of Stage 3 Water Shortage

Press Release DECLARATION OF STAGE 3 WATER SHORTAGE MANDATORY WATER CONSERVATION On Monday August 11, 2008, the City Manager of Bessemer City issued a Declaration of Stage III Water Shortage for the City of Bessemer City. Because of the recent high temperatures and lack of significant rain, City Manager, Allan Farris, has initiated Stage 3 Water Shortage Guidelines. According to section 52.34 of the Bessemer City Code of Ordinances, Stage 3 Guidelines, the following restrictions shall apply. In addition to the Stage I voluntary & II guidelines already in effect, it shall be unlawful to use water supplied by the city water system in the following manner: § 52.34 STAGE III WATER SHORTAGE CONDITIONS; RESTRICTIONS. Fun at the New Pool

The pool is now open through Labor Day. The pool has lifeguards, a water slide, drinks and snacks. Hours: 1-6pm, 7 days a week. Admission: $3.00 (children under 6: $1.00) Location: Highway 161 at Crowders Mountain Rd.

Central School Redevelopment

Central School Redevelopment Project Near Completion The Central School Redevelopment Project is nearing completion. Currently 95% of the main school has been completed and the 8 units in book building are being framed. The anticipated completion date is early October.

Monument Dedicated to John and Sarah Kiser

Monument Dedicated to John and Sarah Kiser On February 21, 2008 a ceremony was held to dedicate a stone monument to John and Sarah Kiser. The monument was a project by the Bessemer City Image Committee and the plaque honors the Kiser’s contributions to the Image Committee. The ceremony was attended by John and Sarah, along with their family and friends. A proclamation was read by Mayor Bob Hovis. The monument is located under the “Big Tree” in Downtown Bessemer City.

Collection Containers

Among the changes with the new solid waste contract is a limit to the number of roll-out containers that will be allowed per residence. One can is currently provided, and additional cans are requested by calling City Hall. We will in turn contact Waste Management to order an additional can, and begin billing for the can on your next utility bill. Residential units will be limited to two (2) cans. The charge per can will be $8.50 per month and will be billed on utility bills. Small commercial sites can have more cans, at the $8.50 per can fee. The Public Works Director will decide when dumpster service is required for commercial sites, churches, non-profits, etc.

Collection Schedule

Collection routes for Bessemer City are as follows: Monday – areas west of 12th St., north & south of railroad, and west of Hwy. 161. Tuesday – area south of railroad, and area east of Hwy, 161 (Crowders Mt. Rd. area). Thursday – area north of railroad, east of 12th Street. There are NO PLANNED CHANGES IN ROUTES. Any changes in collection due to holidays will be placed in the Gaston Gazette whenever possible.
